Home 5 General neurology

General neurology includes conditions causing symptoms that may originate in any part of the central (brain and spinal cord) or peripheral (nerve roots, peripheral nerves or muscles) nervous system. Many symptoms may indicate an underlying neurological disorder, but equally many symptoms can occur as part of normal experience and so do not necessarily indicate an underlying condition. Assessing these symptoms is the day-to-day role of the neurologist.

Common conditions seen in the general neurology clinic include:

  • headache
  • tremor or shaking
  • fits, faints or blackouts
  • dizziness
  • slowing or weakness of movement
  • numbness or tingling
  • memory problems

A full discussion and examination will allow an evaluation of these symptoms and a plan for onward investigation / treatment.
